Your Body is Always Talking to You
What message is your body telling you about your health?

Illness and imbalance in our bodies are often a sign that something needs to change. The symptoms and disease patterns provide messages that a trained practitioner can decipher so that the keys to healing are uncovered. The practitioner can then put you in touch with what the body has been trying to tell you so that you can change behavioural patterns and correct or avoid the imbalance now and in the future.
There are many obvious examples of the feedback mechanism between the body and brain that you may not need a practitioner to identify such as thirst, hunger and pain. When you are lacking water in your system, the body sends a message to the brain that you are thirsty and if you listen to this and drink (preferably water), your body will have the water needed to function optimally. If you don't, your body dries out and symptoms of dehydration, and over time more severe inflammation and dysfunction such as lethargy, anxiety, hormonal imbalance and pain will appear until corrected.
When we are lacking the nutrients and energy for the body systems to function, the hunger signal will hopefully be acted upon so we can address this. Conversely, if we act on the communication between the stomach and mind when we are full we will not put on weight and put unnecessary stress on the digestion system. When we eat junk food or take drugs, the body will let us know in several ways that this is not serving us People do not get overweight or get Diabetes overnight - many signals have been ignored in order to get to this point as is the case for disease processes.
When we have sustained an injury and we don't listen to the signals of pain and rest the area, the body may respond with more pain so that we are ultimately immobilised in order to heal. Medications such as anti-inflammatories or pain killers are designed to switch off or numb the necessary pain signal, and long-term healing is often sacrificed for short term relief.
It's amazing how often we don't listen to these more obvious messages from the body and mind especially as we push on in the increasingly busy, high pressured lives we live today. This is the chief reason many of us suffer from ill-health and pain.
Then there are the more subtle signs or messages that a practitioner will identify to solve the puzzle. An example of this might be what time you are waking up in the night and the organ that is involved. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that the circulation is greater in each of the organs at different times. Waking between 1 and 3am for example, might involve a dysfunction of the liver while waking between 3 and 5am may indicate a dysfunction of the lungs.
Through an understanding of the TCM meridian system in combination with the other pattern of signs and symptoms identified in taking the case, an Acupuncturist might attribute a pressure or pain appearing in a particular part of the body with the dysfunction of an associated organ and even an unprocessed emotion.
By going back through the symptoms and disease process step by step and addressing the original message provided by the body or mind so that the needs are tended to, a chain reaction of healing can be triggered. Many other seemingly unrelated problems are rectified as the root cause is identified and healed and people are often shocked by this. They might, for instance, come in with a shoulder complaint and before they know it, they are amazed that their headaches are gone, their digestive system functions better, they feel calmer and their energy and sleep improve.
